Singing is good for health and happiness
By Jerry Brownstein
Scientific studies are proving that singing is good for us on many different levels, and singing in a group is even better. It does not matter if you are singing on a stage or in the shower - Wherever and however you sing, it will stimulate your brain to release endorphins and oxytocin. These are the ‘happy hormones’ that make you feel smarter, healthier, more creative and happier. They also relieve anxiety and stress, which is why singing helps to ease depression and loneliness. In addition, singing boosts our creativity by connecting us to the right side of the brain where intuition and imagination originate.

Singing not only has mental and emotional benefits, but it is also good for your physical health - particularly your heart. When you sing it takes you out of your normal breathing patterns, in much the same way as yoga breathing exercises. This improves your heart rate variability which is a key factor in making your heart stronger and allowing it to work with more ease and less stress. Many studies have proven that singing – particularly in groups – boosts our immune systems. Recent research has even shown that singing can even boost immunity in cancer patients.

The best part of these revelations about singing is that anyone can do it. You don’t have to be good at singing to reap the benefits, and singing together with others magnifies the effects. One study showed that: “Group singing can produce satisfying and therapeutic sensations even when the sound produced is of mediocre quality.”  The research suggests that singing together has been an important part of our evolution. Throughout human history it has brought us closer and deepened our relationships. So the next time the urge to sing hits you don’t be afraid... sing out with all of your heart! The benefits far outweigh the possibility of any embarrassment.
