Following the recent closure of the bookstore on Vara de Rey - an icon in Ibiza’s book world - it is good to be reminded that there are still other places you can turn to in your quest for knowledge. There is a rich network of libraries that has been established on the island for years. Ibiza is part of a shared knowledge project that spans the Balearic Islands with a large database and thousands of titles. Here are a few of these libraries, some of which are likely to be close to your home: Can Ventosa in Ibiza town, Santa Eulària, Sant Antoni, Sant Josep, Sant Jordi and Sant Joan. 

They all offer books on a wide range of subjects including modern literature, the classics, self-help, health, languages, comedy, history and biographies. Best of all they are available to everyone free of charge. To obtain a library card, simply present yourself with a photograph. You will have access to new monthly titles and will also receive digital books in a newsletter that comes straight to your personal email. The libraries have computers with internet and printers for you to use. In addition, you can request titles, reserve study rooms, join book clubs and, for the little ones, there are also guided tours. There is ample access to poetry, which has seen a revival in the 21st century. A great example of this is the ibicencan poet Ben Clark, who has won numerous poetry prizes, including the prestigious Loewe Foundation International Poetry Prize which he was recently awarded.
